Her time has passed
Those days are gone.
She is seen
As just an old lady,
A burden to be shrugged off,
A silly old fool to be patronised
A grey cardigan
Shuffling
around the shopping aisles.
Few will have seen
The night-clubbing
Disco dancing
whisky drinking
pill popping
All night raving
Mini skirted
Sports car driving
Young girl
Of sixty years ago,
And none will care
Ah well…………………. their loss

Beach Huts

Two flags
Adrift in the breeze
Wonky steel chimney
(cold – no smoke)
Splashes of colour
Up wonky steps
Herring gulls
Select their targets
Brightly coloured doors
Offer shelter
The beach huts
Watch the beach
The beach
just watches time,
And waits

Blog
I have started posting some poems and paintings on the Art page. The paintings I have used so far, have been done by a friend of mine, who doesn’t really push his paintings as much as I think he should do.
He only recently, in the past 12 months, “came out” as an artist, as he spends a lot of time with his band “Swamp Dog” gigging around the North West of England.
I am not an artist, and can’t paint to save my life, but there is something about his quirky pictures that make them a lot of fun, so today I am posting a third painting called “Beach Huts”, hope you like it.
Belle Epoque

(Painting “shops” by Simon Footitt)
A gentle amble
Paw by paw
A calming stroll
Past a shop door
Smell the flowers
Take a pill
Ham sandwich too
A stroll, a chill
Ignore the bike
(back tyre looks flat)
Look up above,
Who owns that flat?
Three layers of life
Three gentle souls
A cat sees on
Its daily patrol

Idea
I love writing poems to paintings, so I thought I might add and extra “Art” section page, where I can post paintings (with the artists’ permission where required) with poetry, and see how that works.
I’ve written close on a thousand pieces for artists, and I will see if I can get some of them posted on here – fingers crossed.
SNOW
Old man sits
Looking out of warm window
At the approaching storm
Cold, grey skies
Roll off the Pennine tops
Into the valley below
Swirling snow, wind driven,
Blankets the village
With white innocence
Parents smile
As they build snowmen
For inattentive children
Children laugh
As they slide down
The hill in the park
The old man
Watches the winter
And sips his whisky

Snow
As the first snows of winter make their appearance, I thought the I would post a piece from around eight years ago. It is simply called “Snow”, and can be found in the “General” section.
I like snow, even more so now that I’m retired, mainly because I don’t have to get up on a cold, snowy morning, clean the snow off the car, and drive thirty-something miles into work, having dropped my wife off at her former place of work.
I hope you like the piece
haiku – 2nd January 2026
Stranger rest awhile
Enjoy our peaceful home at
Fionnphort on Mull
Uisken, Bay of Peace
Sea and rock in harmony
Tranquillity here
See the sleeping cat
Legs akimbo, claws at stretch
Do you think I’m cute?
My cat looks at five
More dimensions than I do.
Why am I not phased
Seventeen short sounds
The story covered in full
By just three short lines
Haiku
Another deep dive into my archives has brought out a number of early attempts at haiku. all of them are from 2004. I am still happy with them, and they can be found in the haiku section.
